Understanding Bridges & Routers in Networking
When it comes to computer networks, two important devices that play a key role in communication are Bridges & Routers. Both are used to connect networks, but they work differently and serve unique purposes.
A Bridge works at the Data Link Layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model. Its main function is to divide a large network into smaller segments, helping reduce traffic and collisions. Bridges forward data based on MAC addresses, ensuring that only necessary traffic passes through. This improves network efficiency and reduces unnecessary congestion.
On the other hand, a Router works at the Network Layer (Layer 3). Routers are more advanced as they connect multiple networks together, including different types like LAN and WAN. They use IP addresses to determine the best path for data packets to travel. Routers also provide additional features like firewall protection, traffic management, and routing protocols, making them essential for both home and enterprise networks.
